CONVOY's Rubber Duck
Mack Truck
When the Mack is shown again on the road, we note that the tall exhaust pipe reappears, although the wind breaker atop the cab is laid back.
As the truck passes the school bus into the turn, we can see that the 1977 Mack has reappeared in its derelict state. This same truck continues to the scenes on Mint Road where Ali McGraw exits the truck and up to the bridge scene. Use of slow motion on the turn onto Mint Road reveals very good details on a very battle scarred 1977 Mack. The shot above was filmed just outside of Albequerque. During the movie, you can see the "BUSINESS US 51 ALBEQUERQUE" green guide sign on the signal.
This is still the same Mack used up to and including the initial shots on the bridge.
During the bridge scene, it appears that the 1977 as well as a gutted double are used. This matches statements by the stunt coordinator for the film who indicated that the truck falling off the bridge was staged by pulling a truck across with a cable until it hit a throw switch to kick it off of the bridge.
As pictured on the pre-73/post-73 page, you can note that the initial interior shots are of the 1977 Mack, while the interior shots when the truck leaves the bridge are of an older first-edition R model cab.
Finally, a tid bit for those of you closely paying attention throughout the movie. One of the Rubber Duck Mack's appears elsewhere twice in the movie. It's subtle, but if you are paying attention, you catch it. When the Convoy is picking up, there are a series of shots of trucks parading down the highway. In one shot, a green GMC Astro 95 passes by the camera, and just behind it, you see one of the RS700L stunt doubles pulling a box trailer before it was retorfitted as the bridge fall double.
The other appearance of this truck is in the same sequence of convoy clips just after a close up on a single axle red, white and blue Peterbilt 359 wrecker. In this photo, you only see the top of the cab and sleeper of this same truck.
